1958년 충청남도 당진에서 김정섭 장로와 홍경순 권사 의 둘째 아들로 태어났다. 충남대학교에서 경영학을 전공한 뒤, 중학교 시절부터 마음에 품었던 목회 사역을 위해 감리교 신학대학교 대학원에서 신학 공부를 시작 했다. 미국 남감리교대학교(SMU, Dallas, Texas)의 퍼킨스 신학대학원(Perkins Theological Seminary)에서 신학 연구를 지속한 뒤, 캐나다 맥매스터 대학교 (McMaster University) 대학원 종교학부에서 신약성서 연구로 철학박사 학위(Ph. D.)를 받았다. 유학하는 동안 미국 연합감리교회에서 Deacon 안수를 받았고 (1989), 1993년에 기독교대한감리회에서 정회원 안수를 받았다.

캐나다 토론토에서 강림감리교회를 담임하여 목회하던 중, 감리교 계통의 협성대학교 신학과로부터 부름을 받고 귀국하여 신약신학을 가르치며(1992-2001) 목회 활동과 선교 활동에 참여해 왔으며, 2002년에는 미국 드류 대학교(Drew University)에서 방문교수로 연구년을 보냈다. 그 동안 <사귐의 기도>, <바늘귀를 통과한 부자>, <사귐의 기도를 위한 기도선집 >; 등 여러 권의 저서를 펴냈다. 2003년부터 First United Methodist Church of Belmar, NJ에서 목회했으며, 2005년 와싱톤한인교회의 부름을 받고 이민 목회의 발걸음을 시작했다. 목회를 향한 김목사의 소망은 단 한 가지, 영적 훈련과 영적 교제를 통해 하나님의 살아계심과 사랑과 진리를 세상에 선명하게 드러내는 교회(공동체)를 가꾸어가는 것이다.

1985년에 결혼한 아내 도현주, 88년에 태어난 Original Texan 민우 그리고 89년에 태어난 애린과 함께 살아가고 있다.

He was born to a Methodist family in 1958. After majoring in business administration at Chung Nam National University, he went to Methodist Theological Seminary of Korea (M. Div.) to follow God's call for him in 1981. He continued theological studies at Perkins Theological School at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas (STM) and completed his doctorate (Ph. D.) at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario in 1993. The North Texas Annual Conference ordained him as a deacon in 1989 and the Korean Methodist Chruch as an elder in 1993.

While he was serving as the senior pastor at Kanglim Korean Methodist Church, Toronto, Canada, Hyup Sung University, Suwon, Korea called him to be a professor of the New Testament studies in 1992. After serving there for ten years, he spent his sabbatical year at Drew University as a visiting scholar in 2002 and then started local pastoral ministry at First United Methodist Church of Belmar, NJ in 2003. He has authored several books ( Prayer as Fellowship with God, The Rich Before the Eye of Needle, and The Book of Prayers for Spiritual Formation are the most recent ones). In 2005, he began his ministry for the Korean Americans in Korean United Methodist Church of Greater Washington. His vision for ministry is to build up, through spiritual formation and fellowship, a community of faith which shines forth the radiance of Love, Truth and Life of our Triune God.

He lives with his wife Hyoung Joo Doh since they married in 1985, with son Minoo William (born in 1988) and Aerin (born in 1989).
