The Rev. Han Sung Kim has been a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) of The United Methodist Church serving as a Korean Ministry Plan Missionary, a position with the denomination’s outreach to the Korean American population since October 2013. Effective July 1st, 2016 Rev. Kim will serve the Korean United Methodist Church of Greater Washington as the lead pastor.
Rev. Kim was born in Seoul, Korea and has been in the US since the early 1990s. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Boston University School of Theology in 1995, and holds both Master of Arts (2003) and Master of Theology (2000) degrees from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Currently he is working for Doctor of Ministry at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. He worked as an editor of the Korea Central Daily in San Francisco for three years (1996-1998), was employed by the Harvard College Library (1999-2005), and from 2006 to 2013 was founding pastor of Grace Vision United Methodist Church, in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Of his call to God’s service, he recalls: “During Lent of 2003, my wife and I decided to set some time aside to kneel down and pray together every night, asking God for guidance in our future. Both of us felt that God was calling me as a pastor. As an associate at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Nashua, New Hampshire, I experienced divine grace and love at all times. I can affirm my conviction that God has demonstrated divine guidance through the past 10 years of my spiritual journey.”
Han Sung has extensive experience with immigrant congregations. He prays for a ministry that first of all points “people to Jesus through spiritual formation” and the making of disciples. He also prays for a ministry that embodies “social justice and empowerment of disenfranchised people throughout the world.” He has been married to Sookhyun Kim with two sons.
